    LANA DEL REY

    Soundtrack of Maleficent

    “Once Upon a Dream”

Can a song written for the Disney movie, Sleeping Beauty, actually be redone in such a way to completely make the listerner forget the orginal? In the capable hands of Lana del Rey, this fairy tale love song has become a dark, brooding plea for a love from the past. The melody is simple, but del Rey’s deep alto keeps this piece moving. The longing within the songs is so tangible the heart is wrung dried. Underneath del Rey’s beautiful voice, the music surges and carries this song along. The first listen to the song, one is struck by the beautiful lushness of this song. As in other songs of hers, the arrangement is synth- and string-filled, but del Rey’s voice overpowers everything. Del Rey is the best deliverer of nihilistic love songs ever. The darkness of this song fits the darkness of the movie.
