Toro y Moi Unveils New Single “Heaven” from Bold Upcoming Album Hole Erth
Toro y Moi’s new single, “Heaven,” featuring Kevin Abstract and Lev, is a captivating preview of his forthcoming album, Hole Erth. The track is accompanied by an India Sleem-directed video set against a suburban backdrop, which complements the song’s nostalgic interpolation of Broken Social Scene’s “Anthems for a Seventeen Year-Old Girl.”
“Heaven” is the second single from Hole Erth, following the lead track, “Tuesday.” Reflecting on the creation of “Heaven,” Toro y Moi shared an intriguing glimpse into the songwriting process, describing it as a moment of effortless inspiration. Recorded on the first day of the Hole Erth sessions at Different Fur in San Francisco, the song came together spontaneously, capturing a sense of raw, unfiltered creativity.
Toro y Moi, also known as Chaz Bear, elaborated: “As a musician, you’ll occasionally hear stories about songs that ‘just came out of thin air.’ ‘Heaven’ was just that. Within an hour of opening a random demo session, I found myself writing a second verse, realizing I had something special. This process was about letting go and focusing solely on the songwriting, not the production or mix.”
The release of “Heaven” coincides with the announcement of Toro y Moi’s rescheduled show at The Greek Theatre in Berkeley, now set for October 25th. This marks his largest Bay Area performance to date, following two sold-out nights at The Fillmore in 2019. He will also headline shows at Hollywood Forever in Los Angeles and The Knockdown Center in Queens after the album’s release.
Toro y Moi is known for his chameleonic musical style, and Hole Erth might be his boldest pivot yet. The album melds anthemic pop-punk with autotuned, melancholic rap, reflecting both contemporary sounds and Bear’s diverse musical background, from punk and emo influences to his production work in modern rap. The first single, “Tuesday,” showcases this eclectic blend with its sharp guitar tones and soaring chorus.
Discussing the album’s themes, Bear remarked, “I hope you enjoy this suburban anthem. Growing up, the line between mainstream and underground artists was so clear, but now it’s so blurred I can’t even tell what I like anymore…sometimes.”
