The Kills Unveil Electrifying Cover of Billie Eilish’s ‘Happier Than Ever’ on New EP
The Kills, the ever-evolving rock duo of Alison Mosshart and Jamie Hince, are set to drop their latest offering, the Happier Girls EP, this Friday, September 20, via Domino. Recorded at the legendary Church Studios in London under the sharp direction of Grammy-winning producer Paul Epworth, and with engineering prowess from Riley McIntyre, the EP showcases The Kills’ signature ability to reimagine and strip down their sound. Available in both physical and digital formats, the EP is led by a striking cover of Billie Eilish’s 2021 hit “Happier Than Ever,” which graces the A-side of a 7” vinyl. The flip side offers a non-electric version of “My Girls My Girls,” a standout ballad from the band’s 2023 album God Games.
In digital form, Happier Girls also includes unplugged versions of three more tracks from God Games: “103,” “New York,” and “Better Days,” offering a more intimate look at the raw energy that defines the band’s work.
The Kills have just released their acoustic take on “Happier Than Ever,” a cover that Mosshart says was inspired by a request from Sirius XM last year. “They asked us to do an acoustic session, and I’d been singing ‘Happier Than Ever’ around the house constantly,” Mosshart explains. After the session aired, Domino Records’ Laurence Bell was so captivated by their rendition that he suggested an electric recording. “Here we were, making a non-electric EP, and what’s the first song? An electric cover of our acoustic version!” Mosshart laughs, expressing her gratitude to Billie Eilish for crafting such a “brilliant song.” This unconventional approach encapsulates the spirit of The Kills—always willing to push boundaries and let their dynamic sound evolve.
