S.G. Goodman Announces New Album Planting by the Signs, Shares Blazing First Single “Fire Sign”

S.G. Goodman returns June 20 with Planting by the Signs—her most personal and powerful work yet—out on her own Slough Water Records in partnership with Thirty Tigers. Blending raw indie rock with rootsy Appalachian wisdom, the album marks a new chapter for the Kentucky-born storyteller, whose voice and vision are as bold as ever.
Leading the charge is the electrifying single “Fire Sign,” a self-reflective anthem forged from burnout, grief, and defiant resilience. “Who’ll put the fire out?” Goodman asks. “The only person who can put my fire out is myself.”
Written after years of relentless touring, the album took shape when Goodman finally hit pause, reconnecting with nature, family, and the old Appalachian tradition of “planting by the signs”—aligning daily life with the moon and stars. That concept became a guide, grounding her in ancestral wisdom while she explored love, loss, and healing through 11 stunning tracks.
Produced with Drew Vandenberg and longtime collaborator Matt Rowan (whom she reconciled with after a difficult split), Planting by the Signs features songs like “Satellite,” “Snapping Turtle,” “Michael Told Me,” and “I’m In Love”—all drenched in Goodman’s unmistakable grit, tenderness, and lyrical fire.
With chiming guitars, celestial textures, and a spirit rooted in storytelling, Planting by the Signs is a record that reminds us to slow down, look up, and listen to the world—and each other.
