HNAF: White Denim’s ‘12’: A Bold Step into Genre-Blending Brilliance
White Denim’s twelfth studio album, aptly titled 12, marks a significant evolution in the band’s sound and creative process. We’re featuring this as in our HOT NEW ALBUM FRIDAYS as a result of the genius behind this album. Frontman James Petralli took full control of this project, relocating to Los Angeles and embracing a more experimental approach. This shift is evident in the album’s diverse range of genres and innovative production techniques. We feel this is one of Petralli’s best albums yet.
The opening track, “Light On,” sets a vibrant tone with its fusion of electronica and Tropicália, showcasing Petralli’s ability to blend different musical styles seamlessly. Following this, “Econolining” and “Flash Bare Ass” maintain the album’s energetic momentum, each offering unique sonic experiences that highlight the band’s versatility.
A standout moment on the album is “Look Good,” featuring Austin’s soul singer Tameca Jones. This track delves into funk and soul, providing a refreshing contrast to the preceding songs and demonstrating White Denim’s capacity to explore various musical landscapes.
The album concludes with “Precious Child,” a smoky ballad that leans heavily on brass and vibraphone, adding a jazz-inflected touch to the record’s finale. This closing track encapsulates the album’s experimental nature and Petralli’s willingness to venture into new territories.
12 represents a bold departure from White Denim’s earlier work, embracing a more experimental and genre-blending approach. Petralli’s leadership and innovative production have resulted in an album that is both a testament to the band’s roots and a step forward into new musical realms.
