Australian duo Good Morning, comprising Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons, have consistently delivered lo-fi indie gems, and their 2024 release, The Accident, is no exception. This album showcases their evolution as songwriters and musicians, offering a collection that is both introspective and sonically rich. We would be remiss if we didn’t give this some coverage as this was one of the best album releases of 2024.

The album opens with “Baby Steps,” a track that gently immerses listeners into Good Morning’s world. Its gradual build and layered instrumentation set the tone for the journey ahead. “A Telephone Rings” follows, maintaining the duo’s signature lo-fi aesthetic while introducing a catchy melody that lingers long after the song ends.

“Romance” stands out with its saxophone accents, adding a jazzy undertone that complements the track’s reflective lyrics. The subsequent track, “Peaches,” offers a breezy, folk-inspired sound, with flute contributions that enhance its lighthearted feel.

The album’s midpoint, “Thrills of the Family Man,” delves into more complex themes, with introspective lyrics accompanied by a rich instrumental arrangement. “Perfect Fishing” continues this contemplative mood, showcasing the duo’s ability to craft songs that are both musically engaging and thought-provoking.

“The Grateful Dead” introduces an electric buzz that adds a layer of unease, reflecting the song’s exploration of love and uncertainty. Despite its brevity, “I Can’t Make It Up to You” leaves a lasting impression with its ethereal sound and poignant lyrics.

The album concludes with “Soft Rock Band,” an ambitious eight-minute track that encapsulates the essence of Good Morning’s artistry. Its expansive structure and introspective narrative serve as a fitting finale to the album, leaving listeners with much to ponder.

The Accident is a testament to Good Morning’s growth, blending their lo-fi roots with refined production and instrumentation. While the album stays true to their established sound, it also ventures into new territories, offering a fresh perspective on familiar themes. For fans and newcomers alike, The Accident is a compelling addition to Good Morning’s discography, inviting listeners to reflect on the nuances of everyday life through its melodic and lyrical depth.
