Flying Lotus Explores the Uncanny in New EP ‘Spirit Box’
Flying Lotus, the acclaimed Los Angeles-based producer and musician, has unveiled his latest EP, Spirit Box, marking his first non-soundtrack release since 2019’s Flamagra. This eight-track project, released on October 29, 2024, showcases Flying Lotus’s signature genre-blending style, drawing inspiration from the supernatural and mystical.
The EP opens with “Ajhussi,” a track that begins with drawn-out Vangelis-like synthesizers before transitioning into a shimmering house beat accompanied by chipmunk vocals. This unexpected foray into house music sets the tone for the EP’s exploration of new sonic territories.
“Garmonbozia,” a term referencing David Lynch’s Twin Peaks, features Flying Lotus’s own vocals, adding a personal touch to the track. The EP also includes collaborations with notable artists: “Let Me Cook” features Dawn Richard, and “The Lost Girls” showcases Sid Sriram. These collaborations infuse the EP with diverse vocal textures, enhancing its eclectic soundscape.
The closing track, “Ingo Swann,” offers an upbeat, slightly melancholic dance sensation, further highlighting Flying Lotus’s versatility and willingness to experiment with different genres.
Spirit Box arrives just in time for Halloween, aligning with its themes of transformation and the uncanny. This release not only reaffirms Flying Lotus’s position as a trailblazer in the music industry but also hints at new creative directions for the artist.
