Dr. Dog has unveiled their latest single, “Tell Your Friends,” a captivating prelude to their much-anticipated self-titled album set to release on July 19th, 2024. This new LP marks their first in six years. Departing from the “full-blown, psychedelic soundscape” of their lead single “Talk Is Cheap,” praised by Paste as one of April’s best songs, “Tell Your Friends” offers a sweetly nostalgic ambiance with delicate piano melodies and scratchy beats. Notably, it’s the first track in Dr. Dog’s extensive history penned by drummer Eric Slick. Lead guitarist Scott McMicken shares his admiration, stating, “I immediately loved the beautiful simplicity of it. Eric ended up playing guitar instead of drums, and we decided to present it in a very minimalistic way that seemed to fit with something so catchy and timeless.” The album is now available for pre-order.
“Talk Is Cheap” and its accompanying video, following the standalone single “Still Can’t Believe,” provided a vibrant glimpse into the new record, encapsulating Dr. Dog’s signature eclecticism and lively spirit. The album promises a dynamic blend, from soul and surf-rock to symphonic pop, all energized by the band’s renewed creative vigor. In addition to accolades from Paste, “Talk Is Cheap” garnered support from Brooklyn Vegan, Relix, WXPN, Exclaim!, Glide Magazine, and more.
For their 11th studio album, the Philadelphia-based band embraced a novel collaborative process, fostering deeper synergy among members McMicken, Slick, bassist Toby Leaman, rhythm guitarist Frank McElroy, and keyboardist Zach Miller. Their creative journey began with an intimate session at Leaman’s uncle’s cabin, culminating in the joyously uninhibited psych-rock of their new self-titled LP. This album showcases Dr. Dog, now over two decades into their illustrious career, evolving and growing together, committed to crafting songs that illuminate the mind and uplift the soul.
