Discover Personal Trainer’s Exciting New Single “Cyan” from Upcoming Album Still Willing
Personal Trainer recently announced their upcoming album Still Willing, set for release on August 2nd via Bella Union. Today, the Dutch collective shares the new single and video, “Cyan.” Following the lead single “Intangible” and the “delightfully absurd” (UPROXX) “Round,” frontman and bandleader Willem Smit describes “Cyan” as “a weird, happy pop track,” driven by Nick Bolland’s saxophone and enriched by the vocals of Dutch alt-pop singer Lena Hessels.
Smit reflects on the creation of “Cyan,” stating, “I had been working on ‘Cyan’ for a while, and when I needed words, this song naturally became a love song. I was hesitant about openly declaring my love in a song destined for the album. The conflict of deeply caring about making music while feeling like I shouldn’t sing certain things intrigued me. I wrote a song about this friction, aiming to make myself laugh or at least smile, and eventually, I grew to love it. Lena intuitively changed the rhythm of the chorus slightly, adding a bounce. I removed many of my own vocals and replaced them with hers.”
The video for “Cyan,” directed by Louis Cooper, features portraits by Gracie Richmond. Cooper comments, “I couldn’t think of anything better than unusual figures dancing in crude and awkward animation. Influenced by Jim Blashfield and Michel Gondry, I aimed to create something that vaguely resembles the vintage charm of Captain Pugwash and Mr. Ben rather than a visual collage.” We love the new track and think you will too.
