Acclaimed Danish, London-based composer and viola player Astrid Sonne has announced her debut US tour for fall 2024. See dates and details below.
Astrid Sonne has been meticulously crafting varied moods through her electronic and acoustic instrumental works throughout her celebrated discography. Her album “Great Doubt,” released via Copenhagen’s Escho, showcases this talent, now enhanced by the prominent use of her own vocals. Each track distinctly reflects Sonne’s style, characterized by contrasts and impeccable timing. The sparse lyrics highlight different scenes and emotional states, allowing the music to convey deeper meanings. These lyrics also form an ambiguous pattern, aligned with the album’s title, exploring questions of the world and love.
The viola, Sonne’s trusted instrument since her youth, is seamlessly integrated throughout the album. It features prominently in tracks like “Almost,” with a pizzicato-driven arrangement, and “Give My All,” which includes cinematic elements and paraphrases Mariah Carey’s 1997 ballad. The album also ventures into woodwinds, balancing the string sections with digital brass and airy flutes. Additionally, beats and detuned piano bring fresh elements to the soundscape, demonstrating Sonne’s ever-evolving musical practice. Check out “Great Doubt” below:
