Fresh off their farewell shows and a national run of advance screenings for their highly anticipated motion picture Free LSD, the multimedia punk institution OFF! have dropped a limited deluxe Blu-ray edition of the film via Fat Possum. In tandem with this release and the imminent worldwide digital debut from distributor Buffalo 8, the band has unveiled the apocalyptic, psychedelic barnstormer “Oblivion.” This track is one of three unreleased songs on the bonus CD included in the deluxe edition Blu-ray. These bonus tracks, recorded during the Free LSD album sessions, delve deeper into the musical and lyrical themes that bridge the album and film.
The single artwork for “Oblivion” features a still of Keith Morris, whose character confronts the existential threats that the song’s lyrics warn about. It’s a do-or-die battle against an invisible empire bent on perpetual Armageddon.
The film Free LSD centers on Keith (played by Keith Morris), an elderly sex shop owner who falls for a younger woman seeking a gift. Their relationship turns physical, but Keith’s performance issues lead him to a peculiar erectile dysfunction doctor (played by David Yow), who offers an experimental drug. This drug reveals a parallel universe where Keith is the frontman of OFF! and the target of an advanced AI species determined to stop the band from creating an album that could awaken human consciousness. Written and directed by OFF!’s Dimitri Coats, the film and the 2022 album of the same name intertwine, pushing the band to diversify their incendiary sound. The album, enhanced by drummer Justin Brown (Thundercat, Flying Lotus, Herbie Hancock) and bassist Autry Fulbright II (…And You Will Know Us by the Trail of Dead), explores psychedelia, free jazz, and noise while maintaining their hardcore snarl.
