Occurrence – “I Have So Much Love To Give”
Occurrence – “I Have So Much Love To Give”
Count us as music listeners lucky. I Have So Much Love To Give was the album that wasn’t supposed to be able to happen. According to the band’s bio:
Everyone in Occurrence was a little fried after finishing their second album, Everyone Knows the Disaster Is Coming, and they all have a lot going on in their lives. Cat Hollyer writes for Hallmark and has four children, and her fellow Occurrence singer Johnny Hager teaches high school Spanish in New York City, while composer Ken Urban is busy both writing plays and teaching playwriting at MIT.
Luckily, Hollyer came to visit Hager and Urban with some songs, Hager supposedly yelled, “we’re not making another album”. Well, they did, and it’s absolutely beautiful. Hollyer has this beautiful plaintive yet strong voice. They don’t sound much like anyone out there, which is the beauty of them. The album starts out with “I Have So Much Love to Give”, and just keeps getting better and better. This is my nighttime go-to. And I totally identify with this line from the song:
I have so much love to give / To the wrong people
On their You Tube site, they have the following quote, which really sums up the beautiful music and words on this album that was not supposed to be.
The lover’s fatal identity is precisely: I am the one who waits. – Roland Barthes, A LOVER’S DISCOURSE
