Nerd Rock: Mount Sharp – “Apostate”

Mount Sharp

“Apostate”

What a tremendous, eclectic, almost nerdy song.  I love this band.  Their sound is so crystal clear, their vision a lot less clear, which is the way it should be.  Here is their bio (oh, it explains a heck of a lot):

Swood (Sarah Wood) writes songs but is not quite sure how they aren’t all about sad robots in space (or cats).

Bryan is a guitarist who makes pictures and videos. He lives in the suburbs now with his family, which includes a legitimate trash cat in the basement.

Sal is a drummer who lives in a 4:4 human-to-animal household, rides a tricycle as a primary mode of transport, and has a collection of several thousand business cards.

JPK is a bass player who reads all the comic books and always shows up to practice with seltzer and a sci fi book.

These are people I want to hang out with.  These are my type of people making my type of music.  “Apostate” is the type of song I would sell my soul to write.  The words are so perfect, so introverted, so real, as if written in Jane’s (from Tanith Lee’s “Silver Metal Lover”) diary or my own as to that.  The music just wraps around Swood’s vocals, lifting the lyrics up and making you realize Swood is what you are dreaming about.  Read the lyrics; they are the best:

Surely I’m not made of bone and blood Surely I’m something that’s never or always been

Am I still earning your love?

Do I remind you of someone you could dream of?

Surely you know me (at least you have known)

And in knowing can let me go Am I still earning your love?

Do I remind you of someone you could dream of?

You know I could almost thank you

For growing my apostate crowd

Surely they can see a change is gonna come

And in seeing raise the flag and roll the drums

Am I still earning your love?

Do I remind you of someone who could ever be enough?

You know I could almost thank you

For growing my apostate crowd
