LUMP – “we cannot resist”
LUMP – “we cannot resist”
LUMP, the collaboration of Laura Marling and Mike Lindsay, is a joyous rock n roll romp. Marling has always been one of my favorite lyricists, often displaying maturity way beyond her years. On “we cannot resist”, her maturity combines with innocence to create that perfect juxtaposition of first love with hedonism, used as a warning that, without careful planning, first love can turn to profanity. Marling’s voice is beautiful in this song, really the best I’ve heard her. The production helps by pushing the vocals to the forefront. The beginning with the whisper “we cannot resist” foreshadows the fact that youthfulness and innocence can turn into profanity and seduction. The lyrics “My object of choice is the oil that forms/On a well strung voice.” actually sums up the whole song beautifully. See below the lyrics.
LYRICS:
(we cannot resist)
Kids on the run
Falling for each other
Down to have fun and out to burn rubber.
Kids on the run
Smiling at each other
Show’s begun and they’re down to play lovers.
Kids on the run
Only just discovered
That now they found one they will never love another.
Kids in love
Smiling at each other
That’s the first taste from which no one will recover.
Among the world of things untamed
Are the objects as yet unexplained.
My object of choice is the oil that forms
On a well strung voice.
(we cannot resist)
Kids on the run
Living for each other
Catching out stars and sitting in gutters.
Kids on the run
No one will recover
That is the fate of these first time lovers.
Kids on the run
Spectacles of colour
Sparks will fly out from the skin of loves drummer.
Kids in love
Living for each other
That’s the first taste and no one will recover.
Speak to me sacredly
On the subject of profanity.
Thick blooded hedonists
Seduced by what we cannot resist.
Kids on the run
Falling for each other
Out to have fun and down to burn rubber.
Kids on the run
Smiling at each other
Show’s begun and they’re down to play lovers.
Kids on the run
Only just discovered
That now they found one they will never love another.
Kids in love
Smiling at each other
That’s the first taste from which no one will recover.
Among the world of things untamed
Are the objects as yet unexplained.
My object of choice is the oil that forms
On a well strung voice.
Speak to me sacredly
On the subject of profanity.
Thick blooded hedonist
Seduced by what we cannot resist.
