John Davis, the driving force behind Superdrag, has unveiled plans for his forthcoming solo LP, JINX, set for release on September 27 through the Lost In Ohio label. Fans can already get in on the excitement by pre-ordering the album now. Today, Davis teases what’s to come with the release of the album’s second single and its accompanying official music video, “Take My Brains Out.”
Davis shares some insight into the track, explaining, “Tom [Pappas], who’s also from Superdrag, burst out laughing the first time he heard the chorus. It’s a bit quirky, but there’s a deeper resonance to it. Our minds can sometimes be our worst enemies, to the point of feeling like they’re out to destroy us. I guess I was imagining what it would be like if we could just take them out when they get that way. And, honestly, the lead guitar part always cracks me up. I’ve read in a few places that if something in your song makes you laugh, you should definitely keep it in.”
JINX was originally conceived as a new Superdrag album, with recording sessions beginning under that banner. But as the process dragged on, the band’s energy and patience began to wane, eventually leading to the project being shelved. Yet Davis, ever the earnest songwriter, couldn’t let these songs languish. Instead, he’s breathed new life into them, delivering an album that promises to be as candid and introspective as ever.
