Growing up in both the United States and Colombia, Uchis developed a passion for music and writing from a young age. She was influenced by Colombian pop and hip-hop, and jazz icons like Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. During her childhood, she wrote poetry and played piano and saxophone in her school band. After briefly attending community college post-graduation, she quickly left to focus on her music career. At 18, she released her first mixtape, “Drunken Babble,” on DatPiff for free. This self-produced work, done on her laptop, gained attention in the Blog Era and underground music scenes, attracting notice from artists like Snoop Dogg and Diplo. As a teenager, Uchis worked at a grocery store, saving money to move to Los Angeles. Her ambition and talent were evident, and when she independently released her first EP “Por Vida,” her rise to stardom seemed unstoppable.
Now on her 4th album she’s all grown up and performing like a seasoned musician who has, in her wake, inspired a new trove of younger and older musicians. Uchis delivers one of the best albums of her career with Orquideas.
