Brandt Brauer Frick – ‘Miami’ Review
Marching to the beat of their own drum the Berlin trio, Brandt Brauer Frick rewrite the rules of techno music with the release of their third LP, Miami due out on March 19. Known for their experimental style of “techno without the technology,” Brandt Brauer Frick brings a sense of craftsmanship to the club by using classical instruments to create house beats.
While stripped down from Mr. Machine (the trio’s orchestra drive LP released in 2011), Miami stands alone as an intense ten song journey filled with drama and a lineup of guest vocalists including Jamie Lidell, Om’mas Keith, Gudrun Gut, Erika Janunger and Nina Kraviz.
The trio self-defines their genre as ‘emotional body music,’ which is achieved with hard driven percussion, breathy vocals and shifting tempos. Listening to Miami you are sent to the imaginary world where thumping percussion beats as you race through dark winding streets, a mysterious piano strikes as you bump into the unknown, your heart pounds.
A video for their single, “Plastic Like Your Mother” is available at The Guardian. Directed by Daniel Brandt and Julian Schleef, the video is shot from cameras strapped to the heads of 28 dancers, mirroring the skewed angles of their music.
