Jedd Hughes has one of the most plaintive voices I have ever heard. When he sings, he sounds like he’s singing through the tears of a broken heart. It is amazing how much emotion he delivers with just his voice (oh, and you should hear his version of Dylan’s “Lay Lady Lay”). Hughes, coming from Quorn, Australia, knew from the age of 8 he wanted to write and sing his own music. I am so glad that he did so. His music is some of the best of Americana. At times, he reminds me of Victor Krummenacher, which is a very good thing. As his bio (from Billboard) states:
Riddled with dramatic string arrangements, thick tremolo guitar, and pulsating drums, “Animal Eyes” is a glimpse into Hughes’s personal reflection of darker times in his past, written over the course of six weeks in a dimly lit spare bedroom. “The idea came from a phone conversation with Rodney Crowell when he asked what I was up to, I said, ‘Crawling out of the morning.’ There’s a song, he said.” Billboard notes that the “stirring” lead single features “Hughes’ whispered vocals alongside haunting string accompaniment and seductive electric guitar parts while he sings about trying to find himself.”
It is so rare when the orchestration backs up a voice as well as the strings on this cut. I am so impressed with Jedd Hughes. I believe he might be the best “Country” artist out there. He is on tour this summer. Catch him (oh, and bring your tissues)
