Conceived in the studios of Los Angeles and Paris, WILL LAUT is a duo led by Frankie Gothard, also known as COH, a prominent figure in the computer avant-garde scene of the late ’90s. This project is deeply rooted in COH’s earlier collaborations with vocal performers such as John Balance of Coil, Cosey Fanni Tutti of Throbbing Gristle, and fashion designer Ann Demeulemeester. The duo’s singer and frontman, William Laut, brings a diverse musical background to the table, having been a Eurovision contender, worked with children’s choirs, composed rock anthems, and organized Asian music showcase festivals.
WILL LAUT’s music blends ambient pop, noir minimalism, and synthesizer tango, creating a unique sound characterized by atmospheric textures, minimalist rhythms, and haunting crooner-style lyrics.
Their self-titled EP intertwines unpredictable textures and abstract vocals to create a chilling auditory experience. The four tracks feature haunting melodies that evoke the feel of a horror film soundtrack. Inspired by themes of doomscrolling and the quest to find humanity in the digital age, the EP delivers a poignant message across various demographics. With minor piano intervals and eerie sound effects, the new release conjures influences from Giorgio Moroder, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and Pauline Anna Storm.
WILL LAUT’s self-titled EP is captivating and will definitely appeal to listeners with its haunting soundscapes and evocative themes. Check out “Wine Of Love” below:
