White Denim Embrace 70s Vibes with New Album “12” and Single “Second Dimension”
White Denim, one of the most electrifying rock bands to rise from the 2000s, is set to ignite a new era with their twelfth studio album, 12, dropping on December 6 via Bella Union. Bursting onto the Austin, Texas scene back in 2008, the band quickly gained a reputation for their high-energy post-punk anthems. Frontman James Petralli has navigated the band’s ever-evolving lineup and sound, taking listeners on a journey through vibrant fusions of soul, jazz, and Southern rock, all while maintaining an authentic, in-the-moment vibe. This latest album marks a bold shift toward the raw, unpolished allure of 70s garage rock.
Their new single, “Second Dimension,” offers a tantalizing glimpse of what’s to come. With its lively basslines, playful flute flourishes, and Petralli’s emotive croon, the track channels the spirit of 70s orchestral funk while adding a distinctly modern edge. Released today alongside a dynamic official video, the song captures White Denim’s knack for reinventing retro influences with fresh energy, paving the way for a record that promises to be both a nostalgic throwback and a step forward.
Petralli reflects on the creation of “Second Dimension,” crediting Michael Hunter for composing the music. “He is a wonderful creative musician,” Petralli shares. “When I write for others, I try to create a portrait of them with the lyrics or, at the very least, capture an aspect of who they are to me.” Inspired by Hunter’s quiet, thoughtful nature, Petralli aimed to honor his bandmate through the song’s reflective tone, while also encouraging listeners to delve into poetry and philosophy—a fitting invitation from a band known for keeping their music as thought-provoking as it is unpredictable.
