Tribute to The Delta: Debra Devi – “10 Miles To Clarksdale”
Debra Devi
“10 Miles To Clarksdale”
Wild Little Girl
Debra Devi is so wonderful. She combines the blues and country so perfectly, her voice is so plaintive and real, and her slide guitar playing is on the same level as Bonnie Riatt. As a kid, she heard the guitar work in CCR’s “Suzie-Q”, and it sent a shiver down her spine. Finally, at 15, she got the “unladylike” electric guitar and delved into the blues and country, and she has never looked back, thankfully for all of us fans. “10 Miles To Clarksdale” is her love song to the Mississippi Delta and especially to the ghost of Robert Johnson, her muse. This is great music. I love the fact that Devi is a “Jivamukti yoga practitioner, (and her) favorite mantra is lokah samastah sukhino bhavantu, “may all beings everywhere be happy and free.” This music and this song in particular makes me happy and free. Thank you, Debra. This is great, powerful, wonderful music.
