Punk Rap: Eyedress – “I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend”

Eyedress

“I Don’t Wanna Be Your Friend”

WOW.  This is exactly what hip hop should sound like.  There is an anger over betrayal that permeates this song and makes it so dark.  Just think of Ian Curtis doing rap and throw in some great percussion, and you’ve got Eyedress.  As his bio says:

Eyedress is the alias of Filipino artist Idris Vicuña, formerly lead guitarist of psychedelic indie/noise-pop band Bee Eyes. Born in 1990 in the city of Makati, Philippines, Vicuña relocated to the US with his family at the age of 6. He was raised in Phoenix, Arizona before moving to San Clemente, California at the age of 13, where he started playing bass in a Crass-influenced crust-punk band.

It is his crust-punk background that makes his rapping so mean and brutal.  This is the rap that I’ve been waiting for; a combination of rap, punk, and noise-pop thrown together with Eyedress’ unique, deep rap voice.  I love this guy.  I would never betray him (cuz he’s scares me so.)
